Pete Johnson's Tatuaje, or "Tattoo," cigars began as a small boutique project and have become some of the most coveted cigars anywhere in the world. Each Tatuaje cigar offers a richly textured, flavor-filled experience for modern smokers and traditionalists alike, inspired by the great Cuban cigars of the past.

Tatuaje Cigar Style

Tatuaje cigars deliver deep complexity and richness, balanced by a very pleasing smoothness. The most popular Tatuaje lines are medium to medium-full in body. Flavors differ from blend to blend, but pepper, coffee, leather, cocoa, earth, and spice are often at the heart of a Tatuaje cigar.

Tatuaje Products

Pete Johnson offers a diverse collection of Tatuaje cigars, including special editions, which have become a hallmark of the brand. Availability can be very limited, but there are still plenty of Tatuaje cigars to choose from.

One of the most sought-after lines is the Tatuaje Miami collection, known to fans as the "brown label." These cigars are handmade at a boutique factory in Miami, Florida, owned by Jose "Pepin" Garcia of My Father Cigars. They combine Cuban-seed tobaccos grown in Nicaragua with an Ecuadorian wrapper, for a smooth, flavorful, Cuban-style smoke.

History of Tatuaje Cigars

Tatuaje cigars grew out of Pete Johnson's passion for cigars, especially finely made Cubans. Johnson had long dreamed of starting his own brand, but it was a meeting in 2003 with Cuban-born cigar maker Pepin Garcia that made it happen.

Garcia presented Johnson with many blends, but none seemed right for his first cigar. Garcia then asked what kind of cigar he wanted, so Johnson handed him a Cuban cigar he loved. Garcia blended and rolled a cigar to match it, and Johnson finally had a cigar to call his own. The final step was the name. Johnson, a tattoo enthusiast, picked the Spanish word for tattoo, and Tatuaje was born. The Garcia family still makes the cigars for Johnson, and what started as a humble brand is now among the most highly rated and admired in the business.

When to Smoke a Tatuaje Cigar

Tatuaje cigars come from Pete Johnson's love of wine, whiskey, and fine dining, so the best time to smoke one is alongside an excellent drink, during or after a fine meal. This draws out the rich flavor of the tobacco. Fine whisky, red wine, port, and Madeira are recommended pairings for many of Tatuaje's best cigars.

The Tattooed Leaf

Tatuaje cigars are produced in very limited numbers and sell out fast, so it is always smart to add them to your collection when they are available. Don't miss the chance to smoke these distinctive cigars, and add Tatuaje to your humidor today.
