The Juan Lopez brand of cigars was produced in large quantities earlier. It is one of the brands of cigars which are still made by hand till now. This brand of cigars was originally made in an area of Cuba which is famous for the quality of tobacco grown there.
Juan Lopez was famous as connoisseur of cigars in Spain. He bought out a factory to make cigars in 1870 and started producing the Juan Lopez brand from 1876. The tobacco used to make this brand of cigars was grown in the area known as Vuelta Abajo which was famous in Cuba the cultivation of tobacco. These cigars are made manually by skilled people. Juan Lopez created other brands of cigars and introduced them between 1880 and 1889, which were called El Marquez, La Veneciana, La Mandolineta and five other different brands. But none of them were as successful as the original Juan Lopez brand which was named after the founder.
Even after the death of Juan Lopez in 1990, the brand remained as successful as before. The heirs of Juan Lopez inherited the company in 1908.The success of the Juan Lopez brand of cigars continued with the brand winning a prize in the National Exposition held in Cuba in 1911. In 1918 the brand was taken over by a company called Cia y Del Peso and was controlled by it till the time the revolution ended in 1960 when the company was nationalized by the new government of Cuba.
The socialist government of Fidel Castro came to power in Cuba after the revolution ended in 1960. The new government brought about many changes which also included the taking over by the government all the privately owned properties belonging to the Cubans with the help of newly promulgated laws on agrarian reforms. The properties that were taken over included those belonging to foreigners and especially the Americans. This in turn prompted the United States to freeze all assets belonging to Cubans in America and to impose a trade embargo on Cuba which banned all products made in Cuba to be sold in the United States.
The cigar industry was taken over by the Cuban government in the same way as all other private properties and became a state owned industry in 1960.
To run the cigar industry the government in Cuba formed a state owned company named Cubatabaco whose responsibility was to regulate the production and distribution of all kinds of tobacco products in the domestic and the international markets. This went on till the company called Habanos SA was founded in 1994. This was a branch of Cubatabaco which was now c given the earlier responsibility of promotion, distribution and export of cigars, cigarettes and other products made from tobacco to the world markets.
The popularity of Juan Lopez brand of cigars experienced a downturn during the period between 1970 and 1980 because of reasons which remained unknown and became a minor player from being a major player in the cigar industry in Cuba. Presently the Juan Lopez brand of cigars are produced by two separate companies namely the company named Habanos SA owned by the Government of Cuba and an American company called Altadis.
After the nationalization of the cigar industry in Cuba, the distribution and the production of the Juan Lopez brand of cigars is controlled by Habanos SA. This brand of cigars is made manually by the company called Habanos SA in the factory in Havana in Cuba. The tobacco leaves used for making this brand of cigars are grown in the Vuelta Abajo region and are selected with care to give the best quality cigars which help the smoker have a great experience.
The target group for the Juan Lopez brand of cigars are the smokers in Europe who love the taste of these cigars on their palates. The Juan Lopez brand of cigars is considered to be the best cigar to be made by hand in Cuba till this day. The Seleccion 1 variety of cigars received the cigar of the year prize in both France and Spain in 1998.
The export of the Juan Lopez brand of cigars comprises of 1 % of the total exports done by Habanos SA presently. The second version of the Juan Lopez brand of cigars is made in Nicaragua. When the cigar industry was taken over by the government of Cuba in 1960 resulting in the imposition of a trade embargo on Cuba by the United States, the import of cigars from Cuba became illegal. The production of a second version of the Juan Lopez brand of cigars was started in Nicaragua by the company known as Altadis SA to take advantage of the American market. This version is also made by hand like the version made in Cuba but made from the tobacco leaves grown in Nicaragua which is also considered as ideal for cultivating tobacco.
